Prostate and Mental Health update

Wednesday 23rd Apr 2025

I continue to be blown away by the contributions being made from all over the world, that should go without saying really but thank you to everyone who has either donated or shared my story so far.

however, today, it was pointed out to me that my blog was mostly about men's mental health and I appeared to have overlooked the importance of Prostate Cancer and the effect it can have, especially on mental health and for that I sincerely apologise. I am hearing more and more daily about people/friends who have had or are going through the process in relation to this horrible condition and I am more aware now than I was of the effect it is having on our lives, much more than I ever realised.

so my message is, from this experience alone, for gods sake lads, get yourself checked and do it regularly. Myself I have my bloods checked every six months and have done for the last ten years and always include a PSA grading on them as well as having a 'manual' examination every once in a blue moon, and, so far I am lucky and can report no issues. However, I'm not in anyway complacent about it and if I hadn't given it lip service so far then this post is it. Don't mess with the big C chaps, if you experience strange goings on, always get checked, it may just save your life and prevent an ordeal that will affect the rest of it and suffering and worry for yourself and the people around you.
so to the person that had the decency to point out my lack of recognition for the condition, I would like to say thank you and also wish you a successful recovery from your present ordeal.
Brian and I are now looking ahead to spreading the message as far across the planet as we can in the coming weeks and hope you will continue to support us as you have so far.

thank you and much love to you all xx

Thank you all

Thank you to all the lovely people who have been digging deep for this very worthy cause. Brian and I are getting really excited now and looking forward to doing the actual ride. We mustn't lose momentum for this very worthy cause so if any of you know anyone who might like to help, please pass my link onto them, we will be extremely grateful.

Thanks again

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Thursday 27th Mar 2025

On Sunday the 18th of May 2025, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.

My personal cricumstances are very much linked to the above issues, especially in relation to Mental Health. For years I suffered in silence/was in denile that I had , or could have, any issues regarding my own Mental Health. I suffered with PTSD after a rather nasty Motorsport Accident back in August 2007. I sought help for this and by February 2008 was attending psychoperathy sessions to enable me to re-engage with life learning to blank out issues by changing the picture in front of me to another very different and calming alternative. All was good until in June 2016 my brother Steve, took his own life and, to be fair to Steve, he would have no conception of the mess he left behind. I went public about how it affected me and became a champion of Mental health issues, culminating in my leadership of Guernsey's Stop Male Suicide campaign with a few successful Island rideouts to raise awareness that it is "ok, not to be ok". I did this for a while until eventually it was having a detrimental effect on my own health.

I then lost my best mate, Zef Eisenberg (World Land Speed Record holder in many disciplines, mostly bikes) in an awful accident on 1st October 2020 and from then until December 2024, lived on a knife edge, contemplating my own resolve to perhaps end my own life, just for all the pain to go away. I had eaten myself to the point where I needed a stick just to get out of bed, and struggled day after day, progressively getting worse and worse and bigger and bigger by the day/week, so much so that I was virtually taking my own life in a rather strange, uncontrolled way as all my bodily fuinctions began to fail. At that point all I wanted to do was go to sleep and never wake up and I was in great danger of doing just that.

Then, in December last year I had a good chat with myself, reminding me of the people who would be affected by my premature demise and resolved to turn my life around again.

Twelve weeks into my diet regime I have now lost an incredible 5 and a half stone and I am heading in the right direction, mostly due to the incredible support from my beautiful wife Caroline and in general the world is now a better place for me, improving literally daily as I get fitter and healthier again.

So that is my inspiration and resolve to get my message across to the people that it is "OK NOT TO BE OK" and that life is prescious and we should never take that fact for granted.

I hope I have enlightened you to a brief view of just how bad things can be and we never know who is suffering alongside us. Look out for each other and be prepared to be the one who listens and doesn't judge his fellow man for we never know just how desperate a situation they may be in and just by being there for them in their hour of need, you might just have the chance to be the one who saved other peoples lives when it seems to them the only option left was to end their own life to stop the suffering
