Why I Ride

In my relatively short life (28), there have already been 5 suicides of people I knew on a personal or friendly level.

It seems that every year this number continues to grow.

4 of the suicides were men.

3 of those men were actively in the service or were prior service.

 

I ride to raise funds and awareness for men's mental health and suicide prevention, and maybe we can slowly "flatten the curve" and reduce the losses families experience as a result.

Prostate cancer and suicide statistics:

About 270 new prostate cancer diagnoses per year in Erie County, PA.

About 1 in 44 men will die of prostate cancer, but if caught early enough there is a high survival rate of over 95%.

Globally, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men. Over 10 million men around the world are living with or beyond a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Estimated 40 suicides per year in Erie County, PA.

Suicide rates increased by 37% between 2000 – 2018 and were near the peak in at over 48,000 suicides in the United States in 2021.

In 2021 the suicide rate among males was four times higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides.

The military (active and veteran) have a much higher rate of suicide at 42 per 100,000 compared to the general population at 18 per 100,000.

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Tuesday 26th Mar 2024 On Sunday the 19th of May 2024, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
